The Importance of Virus Protection (and we're not talking about COVID-19)
Protecting a home or business computer from security threats should always be a priority
Since Covid-19 reared its ugly and unwelcome head, we have all become familiar with the phrase “Virus Protection”. But no amount of hand washing, sanitizer or PPE is going to protect your computer. Computer virus’s can wreak absolute havoc on your machine and go on to infect others on the same network. Queue stolen passwords & data, corrupted files and spamming of your email contacts. Ouch!
A small subscription to security software can help avoid viral infections, malicious attacks and even identity and financial theft. Antivirus software is basically tiny policemen patrolling the gate to your machine. They seek out, destroy, and warn of potential threats to the system. Frustratingly, new viruses are coming out all the time, but with antivirus software, your computer will be able to keep up with the latest threats.
Do you remember the ILOVEYOU virus which managed to wreck PC’s across the world? It is perhaps the most virulent computer virus ever created! It infected almost 10% of the world’s PCs connected to the Internet and caused a total damage of around $10 billion!! The virus got transmitted via email with the subject line “ILOVEYOU,” with an attachment titled Letter-For-You.TXT.vbs (hard to ignore to be fair, everyone loves to feel loved).
Other infamous viruses include:
Melissa, 1999 - Spread via an email attachment titled “list.doc.” When the recipient clicked on the attachment, the virus would find the Microsoft Outlook address book and email itself to the first 50 contacts on the list with the message “Here is that document you asked for…do not show anyone else.”
My Doom, 2004 – Spread via email. Infected around two million PCs causing damage of almost $38 billion.
Code Red, 2001 – Just required an active Internet connection with which it ruined the Web page that you opened by displaying a text “Hacked by Chinese!”. This virus hit almost 1 million PC’s and caused $2.6 billion dollars’ worth of damage. It took just 1 week to bring down over 400,000 servers (including the White House!)
Sasser, 2004 – Caused PC’s to slow down and crash and resulted in over 1 million infections including critical infrastructures such as hospitals, airlines, and public transportation.
I am a registered partner of Webroot Secure Anywhere, meaning I can monitor and manage your Antimalware software, identify and remove threats remotely along with ensuring your protection is active and up-to-date.
The platform scans billions of IP addresses and billions of URLs across millions of domains, in addition to millions of mobile apps, and leverages machine learning to classify and categorize each according to the threat it represents to your business. Because today’s cyber threat landscape shifts so rapidly, and much of the malware we see today will be gone tomorrow, cloud-based solutions making instantaneous updates must replace static and list-based antivirus solutions.
